Overview

About This Treatment

A hair transplant moves permanent-growing follicles from a donor zone - usually the back or sides of the scalp - into areas of thinning or recession. Once those grafts take, they grow as your own hair because they keep the characteristics of the donor site.

The two main techniques are follicular unit extraction (FUE), which removes individual follicular units, and follicular unit transplantation (FUT), which harvests a donor strip that is then dissected into grafts. Both place grafts into carefully designed recipient sites. Choice depends on donor supply, hairstyle goals, scarring preference, and how many grafts are needed.

At StyleAge, planning comes first: hairline design, density mapping, and an honest view of what your donor area can support. Transplanted hair is lasting in treated sites, but hereditary hair loss can continue elsewhere - so medical aftercare and realistic expectations are part of the plan.

Techniques

FUE and FUT - How They Differ

In FUE, individual follicles are extracted, leaving tiny dot scars that are usually hard to see once healed - often preferred if you wear shorter hair. In FUT (also called strip surgery), a narrow strip of scalp is removed and closed with sutures, leaving a linear scar typically concealed by longer hair.

FUE generally allows a faster, more comfortable donor recovery. FUT can sometimes yield a higher graft count in a single session when donor strip harvesting is appropriate. Your specialist recommends the method that best matches your goals, donor quality, and lifestyle.

Healing

What Recovery Usually Looks Like

The scalp is often tender afterward. Swelling can peak around days three to four. Small scabs at recipient sites typically resolve within about one to two weeks. Most FUE patients return to desk work within roughly a week; FUT may need closer to 10–14 days if sutures are involved.

Strenuous exercise is usually delayed for several weeks to protect grafts and donor healing. Exact timing is personalised after your procedure.

Growth

The Shedding Phase Is Expected

It is normal for transplanted hairs to shed within the first few weeks - often called shock loss. This does not mean the grafts failed. New growth typically becomes visible around months three to four, with density building through months six to twelve, and refinement sometimes continuing to 12–18 months.

Patience through the early “ugly duckling” phase is part of a successful result. Follow-up visits help track healing and growth so you know what is normal at each stage.

Process

How It Works

  1. 1

Consultation assesses pattern of loss, donor density, medical history, and realistic density goals.

  2. 2

Hairline design and graft plan are agreed before the procedure day.

  3. 3

Follicles are harvested by FUE or FUT under local anaesthesia (with sedation if planned).

  4. 4

Grafts are prepared and placed into recipient sites at the correct angle and density.

  5. 5

Aftercare covers washing, sleeping position, activity limits, and scheduled follow-ups.

Advantages

Key Benefits

Uses your own follicles for natural-looking, lasting growth in treated areas

FUE or FUT selected to match donor supply, scarring preference, and goals

Addresses thinning and recession that topical or injectable options alone may not restore

Structured recovery guidance and growth follow-up

Can be combined with medical hair-loss care to protect non-transplanted areas

Candidacy

Who Is This For?

  • Men and women with pattern hair loss and adequate donor hair
  • Those seeking lasting density rather than temporary camouflage alone
  • Patients ready for a procedure day and a multi-month growth timeline
  • Individuals with realistic goals after specialist assessment

Your Visit

What to Expect

Before

  • Full consultation covering medical history, medications, and donor assessment
  • Agreement on technique, graft estimate, and hairline design
  • Pre-procedure instructions on alcohol, smoking, and certain medications
  • Arrange transport home and time off for early recovery

During

  • Local anaesthesia (and sedation if planned) for comfort throughout
  • Donor harvesting followed by careful graft placement
  • Session length typically several hours depending on graft numbers
  • Bandaging or dressings as advised before you leave

After

  • Follow washing and sleeping instructions closely in the first week
  • Expect tenderness, scabbing, and possible swelling that settles over days
  • Avoid strenuous exercise and direct trauma until cleared
  • Attend follow-ups; expect shedding before new growth appears

Outcomes

Expected Results

Transplanted hairs commonly shed within the first few weeks. New growth is often visible around 3–4 months, becomes more noticeable by about 6 months, and reaches a fuller, more mature result between 9 and 18 months as calibre and density continue to improve. Longevity in treated grafts is excellent when planning and aftercare are sound - while medical management may still be advised for areas at risk of progressive loss.
